Go Red Sox

Yesterday afternoon I flopped down on the couch to watch the Red Sox game.  Miss Tulip decided to jump up on the couch and join me.  I love this new interest in hanging out on the couch!  We sat there watching the game together.  She lied there all sphynx-like facing the TV.

After a while, the game got pretty slow.  I lied down next to her, which she amazingly tolerated.  The next thing I knew, I woke up with my face in her fur.  I was pretty much wearing her like a hat.  Once I realized what was going on, I sat up before I disturbed her.  The last thing I needed was a face full of claws and teeth.  She just lifted her head to “see” what I was doing, then went back to sleep.  What an angel!

Every time something good would happen, I’d wake her up.

“Tu! HOME RUN!”

“Tu! Double play!”

She’d just look at me with the “Why are you bothering me?” Face and go back to sleep.  We’re still working on that whole “appreciate the game” thing.

Whole lotta love

Tulip doesn’t generally get up on the couch with us.  However, the last few mornings, she’s jumped up and sat down next to me while I watched the news.

Last night Eve and I were plopped on the couch watching a movie.  Kitty decided to join us.  She hopped up and curled up in a ball between me and the arm of the couch, facing the back of the couch.  I totally can’t resist her when she’s close to me, so I bent down and stuck my face right in hers.  She proceeded to sniff all over my face.  But she does it in such a way that it’s like little kitty nose kisses.  AWWWWWWW!  How sweet is that!?!

More and more so, Tulip is full of love.  I think she’s really starting to understand how important she is to us.

Kitty chores

I had about 10 loads of laundry to wash today, among the million other things on my to-do list.  In the morning while I was gathering up all the laundry, Tulip was very interested in what I was up to.  She was following me around like a little shadow.  I love that!

As I was taking the laundry down to the garage, she was right behind me.  I decided to prop the garage door open so she could come along if she felt like it.  We don’t normally invite her into the garage, but I thought she might like to do a little exploring.  Sure enough she came downstairs too.  She sat at the middle of the stairs and “watched” while I sorted the clothes.  Then it was up and down the stairs with me almost every time I went back down there.  I left the door open for most of the day.  I’m not sure if she went back down there to explore or not, but she was definitely aware that it was open.  At one point I caught her lying across the top of the stairs with all 4 feet hanging over the edge.  “All that laundry makes me tired, Mama.”  She ought to sleep well tonight.

Another satisfied blind cat owner

I just wanted to share this email that I received from Joene. She also had a lovely blind cat. I enjoyed her story so much that I wanted to pass it along to all of you as well.

Hi,
I just wanted to thank you for sharing your experiences with Tulip and for keeping everyone informed on how she is doing. She reminds me a lot of a little cat that I had who was blind. Her name was Sammie and I was lucky enough to have her for 11 years. I found her in my father’s barn in the middle of a winter storm. She was the only kitten and I knew she would not survive the night if I didn’t bring her indoors. Needless to say, she was pretty ill and in order to save her life, I had to make the decision to remove her eyes. The first couple of weeks, I wasn’t sure I did the right thing. She’d crawl up on the bed and not be able to get down. She’d walk into walls and fall down the stairs and each time was so traumatic. My other 2 cats would not have anything to do with her but hiss and growl and she was so tiny and scared.
Then one day, she started playing with a little plastic ball. The ball would hit the wall and that was how she discovered the perimeters of the room. A few weeks later, we taught her how to navigate the stairs. Within a short period of time, she was zooming everywhere and keeping everyone in the house awake at night because all she wanted to do was play, play and play. I could not wait to get home from work to see what else she had learned that day. It was the first time in my life I had an understanding of what new parents go through when their baby learns to talk, crawl and then walk, When I eventually moved into the new house I was building, she was the only one of my 3 cats who wanted to explore every nook and cranny.
I learned a lot from Sammie over the years as I am sure your are learning from Tulip. Sammie didn’t know she was disabled…she thought everyone and everything “saw” what she “saw”. There were several times I’d have her out in the garden and she would try to sneak up on a squirrel, chipmunk or bird. While she was “plainly visible” to everyone including them, she didn’t know it. She never gave up trying and one day I witnessed her catching a little mouse.
I lost Sammie a few days before Valentine’s day. She came down with an upper respiratory infection last summer and it would not go away no matter what antibiotic we tried. Althought it’s been over 6 months, I still miss her. That was why I loved your site. It reminded so much about her. I wished I would have documented all I went through with her and made videos of her. Watching your Tulip helps bring some of those memories back.
If there was any advice I could give, it would be to play with Tulip and try to keep her learning new things. I found that Sammie liked to be challenged. She really liked new experiences. I did let her outdoors only when I was out with her and watching her every move. I adopted a couple of kittens as playmates when one of my older cats passed on. They became the perfect companions to her as both would lay down and become submissive when she would hiss or growl at them. Although I could not tell them apart, she could from their smell. One of them became her best friend, the other one she tolerated.
Good luck to both of you…Would love to hear from you.

Joene, thanks for sharing your story with us!

Where’s the cat?

This morning I woke up and Miss Tulip was curled up in a ball next to me. I told her, “Let’s GOOOO!” and she popped her head up and let out a meow. Then she went to the foot of the bed and waited for the “elevator”.

We went out to the kitchen to make coffee. Eve was still sound asleep. Tulip kitty sat down near her food bowl and “watched” while made the coffee. When it was ready, I went into the other room to wake up Eve. Kitty was right behind me. Once Eve woke up, I went back to the kitchen to get my coffee. Kitty was nowhere in sight. I stuck my head back into the bedroom. No cat. I looked in the living room. No cat. I looked at the bottom of the stairs. No cat. Where the hell is the cat? I called her. No meow.

I sat down on the couch to drink my coffee and watch the news. But I couldn’t stop obsessing over it. Where the hell did that cat go? I took another tour of the house. Under the couch? Nope. In the litterbox? Nope. In the fridge? (Seriously, I looked there.) Nope. I finally found her sitting in the office on her chair. I had already looked in there once, and didn’t see her. I don’t know where she was, or what she was up to, but she was sitting there as innocent as all get-out. Which of course makes me suspicous. I guess kitty had some work to do on her computer this morning.
