Where the punks be!

“Mama, I found something new!”
We’ve had a lot of rain lately, so the girls haven’t had much fresh air. While they were eating breakfast this morning, I decided to open the sliding door for them. Everyone stopped eating and came running to “look” outside. The birds were very chirpy this morning, so they sat in the doorway bird watching for quite a while. Of course I missed them tracking the birds flying around, their little heads bobbing around in unison.
In any case, there are a couple more pictures from this morning in the FlickR photo stream to the right.

Last night when I went to bed, Tulip was still running around and playing so I left her in the living room. I brought Moo to bed with me, but she immediately got down and went back out to see what Tulip was up to. I was really tired, so I didn’t think too much of it. I just went to sleep. A while later I woke up to Tulip howling. She does that sometimes when she plays, so I shrugged it off and went back to sleep again. I awoke a second time to howling, scratching and scurrying. I got up to see what the heck was going on, and I found this little scene:

The girls were having a grand time howling it up and playing in the tree. At least they were playing nicely together. I was exhausted so I grabbed Moo and brought her back to bed. She immediately curled up and started snoring. What’s a girl gotta do to get some sleep? When I woke up I discovered that Tulip had joined us. It was chilly in here and she and Moo were curled up together next to me. I’m really digging this new kitty friendship.
It seems the kitties have finally come to a truce. They never really fought, but they bickered quite a lot. It was really starting to get me down.
Eve and I talked about it and realized that we were favoring Moo. Any time we heard squabbling, we yelled at Tulip. We noticed that it was really breaking Tulip’s spirit. We also noticed that Moo acted like a prima donna because she knew we had her back. We decided that since it was just bitchiness and not real fighting that we’d just stop interfering and let them work it out.
The change was pretty much instant. On the first night, Tulip snuck up on Moo and pounced on her. We didn’t say a word. Moo was shocked that we didn’t defend her. Tulip ran off like she expected to get scolded and appeared surprised that she didn’t. They both seemed confused over what was going on. That night we left them both in the living room and decided they could come to bed on their own if they felt like it. Moo came in an crawled up the side of the bed. When I fell asleep Tulip was still in the living room.
When I woke up in the morning, Tu and Moo were curled up together sleeping next to my legs. I was so shocked that I didn’t know what to do. I thought Tulip would wake up and start a fight. Instead, she woke up, touched noses with Moo, then came up to me for her morning pets. Who are these cats and what have they done with Tu and Moo!?!
Ever since then it’s been pretty smooth sailing. Most of the squabbling has ended. They don’t typically curl up together, but they like to nap near one another. They chase each other. Sometimes they bat the toys around together. Even the punking is now mutual. I think they’re really starting to enjoy hanging out with each other. Good kitties!
As much as we would like them to be, Tulip and Moo are not “free eaters”. In other words, they get fed twice a day rather than having a bowl of food to pick at whenever they feel like. That’s because Tulip would continue to eat until the bowl was empty or she popped like a balloon, whichever came first. As a result, Tulip will do her best to gobble up any food that Moo leaves behind after meal time.
The other day they were finishing up dinner. Moo walked away, leaving a few crunchies in her bowl. Tulip emptied her own bowl, then immediately went for Moo’s. I quietly walked up until I was standing right over her and said in a low voice, “Hey. What are you doing?” As she “looked” up at me with a guilty little face, one little crunchie fell out of her open mouth onto the floor.
“I wasn’t doing anything, Mama. That’s not mine.”
It reminded me of that scene from The Royal Tenenbaums where Gwyneth Paltrow drops the cigarettes that she claims aren’t hers.
“You dropped something.”
“No I didn’t.”
Our friend Caprice suggested that we put some strips of tinfoil on the chair that Moo insists on scratching. Apparently that 6 foot tall cat tree is just too far to walk. In any case, I had read before that cats don’t really like tinfoil, so it seemed worth a try. Behold our ghetto chair with tinfoil:

Also behold the tiny claw marks in the tinfoil:

So much for that idea. I was thinking of wrapping the entire chair in tinfoil like you see in those office gags. Either that or I may just wrap Moo in tinfoil. I’m pretty sure that would do the trick.
