This blog is dedicated to our blind cats Tulip and Miracle. We focus on Tulip’s and Miracle’s adventures in their new home, and our adventures as owners of blind cats. Our purpose is to brighten your day and to share just how wonderful special needs pets can be.
Both cats were born with a condition called anophthalmia meaning they had no viable eyeballs. Before we adopted them, each had her eyes removed and eyelids sewn shut in order to prevent infection. This gives them their cute, sleepy appearance. There is an interesting difference between their two surgeries. While Tulip’s tear ducts were completely removed, Miracle’s were not. As a result her eyes water frequently creating black “eye boogers” that need to be cleaned regularly. We don’t know the reason behind this difference, but it would be worth discussing these two options with your veterinarian if you have a cat in need of this surgery.
We adopted both cats through a local shelter-animal advocacy group called FOCAS. Thank you to FOCAS for giving these cats a second chance at long, happy lives.
